Richard was given a large copy of "Pilgrims Progress" by the Wesleyan Sunday School Young Men's Bible Class in Timaru as a small token of esteem in April, 1890. It is in the hands of Hazel (Rule) Norris in England. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh starting in 1894. After completing his education, he went to South Africa as a doctor.
