Spouse: Alma Carrie McDermond (20 August 1865-8 December 1948)

Married April 23, 1884, in Greeley, Kansas.

John and Alma lived on an 80 acre farm near those of George and their father Enoch. John was like a second father to George's family after George's death. He had nine children and George had six, and the fifteen were like one family. John and Alma had the following children:

  1. Charles Enoch Lyness, b. February 11, 1885, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. February 29, 1952, at Troy, Kansas.
  2. Herbert McDermond Lyness, b. March 5, 1887, at Walnut, Crawford County Kansas; d. November 18, 1985.
  3. Willard Earl Lyness, b. December 13, 1888, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. December 24, 1988, at Lincoln, Nebraska.
  4. Helen May Lyness, b. September 11, 1890, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. August 19, 1966, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas. She didn't marry.
  5. Edwin Morse Lyness, b. September 2, 1892; d. October 6, 1894, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas. He didn't marry.
  6. Grace Loomis Lyness, b. September 28, 1894, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. September 11, 1997, at Girard, Kansas.
  7. Hazel Alma Lyness, b. July 18, 1896, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. February 14, 1983, at Kansas City, Missouri; buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Walnut, Kansas.
  8. John Howard Lyness, b. April 20, 1899, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. January 28, 1983, at Brookville, Florida; buried at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas.
  9. George Ernest Lyness, b. May 23, 1902, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. August 7, 1965, at Savannah, Missouri.
  10. Edith Elizabeth Lyness, b. December 1, 1910, at Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; d. January 8, 2004, at Walnut, Kansas.
