Johan Johnsen Skavdahl was born in the Skavdahl Valley in Sor Trondelag, Norway. He and his family emigrated to the United States, landing in Detroit in June, 1882. On July 4, 1883, he settled on a quarter-section of land near Volney in Hand County, Dakota Territory, with his wife and three children.
Johan's homestead papers indicated that the family lived in a sixteen foot by twelve foot one-room sod house with a board roof, plastered walls, and two windows.
